Running a system stored procedure
trying to write a stored procedure that accesses a database in different SQL
server than the one hosting the data. I entered into the FROM statement
"<OtherServerName>.<DatabaseName>.MyTable" and I get back a message that it
can't find the server "OtherServerName" and tells me to run the store
procedure "sp_addlinkedserver" to correct this. My question is:
Where do I find this sp? Do I run it from the VS.net environment, at the
console of one of the servers? What is the procedure to run it?
Any help is greatly apperceived.
Hi,
You have to create a linked server from local server when you want to access
a database resides in another SQL server. So you have to login into SQL
server
using Query Analyzer or Enterprise Manager and create a linked server.
See sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin in books online or use the
enterprise manager -- conenct to source sql server --
Expand the security -- select linked server and create a new connection to
new server.
Thanks

run time error 3265 after moving from Sql servr 7 to sql server 20
We are using an Vb application connecting to SQL 7. After moving to SQL 2000
and Windows 2000 system the same application send error message when trying
to insert or update any data via the VB application. What did I missied to
transfer?
I try to move the application via the Copy wizard and also via data import
and both had same result. I also checked the security settings on the old
server and the new one.
Thanks Katja
What exactly are you doing when you get the error?

Run Batch Files with SQL Server Agent
I am trying to run a batch file using the SQL Server Agent
(I have scheduled a job). I have chosen the step type to
be 'Operating System Command (CmdExec)'. But I am not sure
how to code the actual command.
The batch file is located at: e:\sqlbackups\delete.bat.
How do specify the Agent to call this batch file?
Thanks,
DeeJayHi,
In SQL Agent Jobs -- Step option, after selecting 'Operating System Command
(CmdExec)' , In the command window you can type
e:\sqlbackups\delete.bat
(This will call the batch file delete.bat based on the schedule interval)
Thanks

How long the batch file takes to run ? We had an issue
where sql agent timed out if the batch file took more than
30 minutes to run. It happened only once and we ran the
file manually from command prompt. You can also try to run
it as a tsql command using Exec
master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'e:\sqlbackups\delete.bat'

I tried to enter the proxy account, but I am getting

I am connected to SQL Server with 'sa' and I tried the

In Enterprise Manager, if you open properties of SQL
Server Agent, click on Job System, you will see option to
specify proxy account, use a local admin for it, and then
restart sql services.

could be the reason for not returning all of the lines.
I tried to enter the proxy account, but I am getting
errors:
'Error executing extended stored procedure: Specified User
can not login'.
I am connected to SQL Server with 'sa' and I tried the
local administrator account (will it be a problem if the
local administrator account has been renamed?) and I also
tried with my own domain ID (sysadmin on sql server) and
same results. I did not think I would need change the
account since 'only sysadmins' can run cmdshell jobs and I
have been trying to run the jobs/commands with sysadmin
rights.
Here is the actual script which works fine manually on the
server:
@.echo off
setlocal

be deleted:
set
Root=E:\sqlbackups\archtlog\CopyArchdTlogBackups\kdirect

2 things,
if you have set up SQL Agent to use proxy account, proxy account will only
be used if the owner of the SQLAgentJob is NOT a member of the local
administrators group.
Secondly if the SQLProxyaccount is a member of the local administrator but
Builtin\Admin has been removed as a part of the a security policy then you
need to add SQLProxy account as a login and grant this account the necessary
rights to execute xp_cmdshell.
I hope this helps your situation.

Rules based Configuration ER design
system." One like Dell Computer has where you build your PC. Are there any
database designs available for this type of thing?
--
Regards,
Gary BlakelyHello Gary,
Since rules based system is too general and you may want to be more
specific.
A very simple sample, let's say you have 3 configuration parameters and 2
rules. 1 rule has some relation to all 3 parameters. The tables shall be
tbl-rule
ruleid rulename ..
1 rule1
tbl-parameters
paramid paramname ..
1 p1
tbl-rule-parm-relation
ruleid paramid value relation
1 1 10 >
1 2 5 <
Some more complex situation might be based on knowledge management, expert
system etc which is beyond a simple E-R desgin.
Some issues may require a bit more in depth attention and may fall under
the umbrella of Advisory Services. Microsoft now offers short-term and
proactive assistance for specific planning, design, development or
assistance with installing, deploying, and general "how to" advice via
telephone. For more information:

RSS Search
search system for a RSS feeds. I will have some 50 RSS feeds (all RSS
2.0 compliant) stored locally on the web server. Now I'm wondering
what would the best method to allow searching of these RSS files.
Since the search will cater to multiple users the search system has to
be robust and efficient. Some ideas that I have for the RSS search
system are:
1. Store all RSS files locally on the web server file system and
perform file system queries. But I guess this might get slow when a
number of users try to search. Moreover, the queries may not be
extensible (for example to allow boolean operations etc).
2. Move the RSS data to the database and then search perform search
using LIKE (or the more advanced indexing service features).
3. Use a 3rd party full-text search engine like Lucene.
4. Use something like XQuery or XPath to query the RSS files directly
but this again *might* (not sure since I haven't worked with either)
get slow when a number of users try to search.
Also, the RSS files I have on the web server will be updated every
hour or so.
So, I have the ideas but I'm not quite sure which one would the most
suitable and efficient. If anyone has ideas on implementing such a
search system for RSS feeds then please share your insight. Thank you
guys!
You might want to shread the XML docs/RSS feeds and store them in a
relational database and FTI the columns of interest and query them there.
I would advise against storing them in the file system or storing them in
XML format in the image type columns. Although Indexing Services and SQL FTS
does support querying XML/RSS feeds using the XML iFilter, you can't index
properties using SQL Server FTS, and Indexing Services support isn't much
better.
You could index the XML/RSS as text but there are some problems indexing the
XML tags.
XQuery FTS support will be supplied when SQL 2005 which will RTM next year.
Please refer to:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/xml/defaul.../sql2k5xml.asp
for more info.

|||You may want xquery friendly database like sql2005. You have xml typed
field. e.g.
create table table1 (i int, x xml)
Now you can directly xquery the xml field like,
select i, x from table1 where x.exist(xquery)
Free download is,

|||RiceGuy,
In addition to what Hilary has recommend, the following web article
"Creating SQL Based RSS Feed ..." at http://www.sswug.org/see/18299 defines
a sample table and data along with a stored proc "GenerateRssFeed" and then
use:
Execute the below sql script to generate the RSS feed.
sp_makewebtask @.outputfile = 'C:Rss.xml', -- Point 1
@.query = 'Exec GenerateRssFeed', -- Put the SP name here
@.templatefile = 'C:RssFeedTemplate.xml' -- Point 2
The article is good and directly explains how RSS feed can be generated
directly from SQL Server 2000. The above web article can also be found at
http://www.dotnetforce.com/(0eqeob4525xs2h55fmagg3zz)/Content.aspx?t=a&n=204
If you're interested in the XQuery support (but not the FTS component), you
might want to review the newly released beta version of SQL Sever 2005
Express, the MSDE 2000 replacement at:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/sql/default.aspx

RSS Search
search system for a RSS feeds.
Thank you
guys!
I'm not surprised to see nobody has responded to your questions.
I'm working on the same type of issues and all I have learned so
far is that SQL Server 2000 would require 'shredding' the data
and putting it into the database where the server could be used
to return results all other current options not being performance
friendly.

|||You could use SQL Server 2005's XML datatype and XQuery support (it is
currently in Beta2).
Best regards

is going to become easier. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
I'll certainly have to study 2005 features as I've asked for
comments at news://microsoft.public.sqlserver.programming to
discuss how others are 'shredding' XML data into SQL Server.

RSS feed with ISO8859 encoding
We have an XML source that reads an RSS feed. The document uses ISO8859 encoding, which causes an error in SSIS: "System does not support ISO8859 encoding". Is there any way around this?
Thanks,
Dirk
Is it maybe possible to get a list of supported encodings from somewhere?
Best regard,
Dirk|||Likely this is by design.
I will get back to you after some more confirmation.
Thanks|||
Andy Conrad (XmlDataReader dev) confirmed
"I don’t think System.Xml supports that encoding. Only the encodings in system.text.encoding are supported. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpref/html/frlrfsystemtextencodingclasstopic.asp
"
Thanks
There are several very different encodings defined by ISO 8859
standard, e.g. iso-8859-1 (Latin 1), iso-8859-5 (Cyrillic), etc.
I believe any of these are supported.
I could not check the task now, but tested that
Encoding.GetEncoding("ISO-8859-1");
works fine, while
Encoding.GetEncoding("ISO8859");
throws an error "'ISO8859' is not a supported encoding name".
So the "ISO8859" without suffix is not a legal encoding,
the feed is not correct.|||You were all right. I had the code ISO8859-15 in my feed, but as described the code is not supported. I didn't knew the importance of the "-xx" at the end so I did not post my extension "-15".
After some mails with the developer of the feed I was able to get the RSS feed now with "UTF-8" encoding - This works perfect!
Thanks for the help!
