running and exporting report using visual basic 6.0 (not using .net)

Hello,
I saw the post below that it is possible if we develop programs with C# or
VB.NET.
My question is
Is it possible to develop the program using visual basic 6.0?
If so, which reporting services dll should be referenced in visual basic 6.0
project?
Could you explain in detail what to do in visual studio IDE environment?

Your best bet is to use URL integration. This is very straight forward and
easy to implement. Generate the URL string, embed the IE browser control (if
all you want to do is show the report) and set the url for the control.
There are lots of examples on the web of how to embed the browser control
and set the URL.
Books online has lots of examples of URL integration.

I have a VB6 program (A.EXE) keeping running on the server. This program
should do lots of things such as monitoring the incoming files, reading the
files and do various kinds of tasks depending on the file type and other
conditions on the file...
With certain type of files, this program needs to call report-generator
(dll) (this is the program I want to write) of SSRS 2005 (passing
parameters) so that the report-generator saves the output file as PDF format
on the network folder. After that this program picks up this PDF file and
send emails to the customer with PDF reports attachments.
So to speak, there is no user interaction, no report viewer required...
(1) Is it doable with vb6.0 projects (possibly connecting to SSRS without
user interaction)?
If so, can you tell me the sample URL site? or attach the sample?
(2) I think it is doable with C#.NET or VB.NET...
Can you introduce the URL of samples? Or attach the sample if you have any?

type of programs. For instance, we use In-Touch a real time MMI (in the real
time control world the environment that interacts with the user is called
MMI, man machine interface). For that I embed a browser control. However, in
your case you have no GUI and so you would need to go to a lower level,
getting some dll that will go to a website and then get the stream back and
do with it as you will. Personally I think this is going to be a mess.
I think a vb.net or c# program using web services would be a much better way
to go that using URL and VB6.

Running a vb.net exe from a dts

I'm trying to run a VB.NET exe from a dts.
This works when I run the DTS manually but just hangs when I schedule the DTS.
Has anyone seen this before ?Many times when you can run a DTS package manually, but not thru a scheduled job, it boills down to one of two things. Either you are running it from your machine instead of the server, or you have permissions that SQL Agent does not.

Physically logon to the SQL Server (not just open Enterprise Manager) and try to run your package ... if it fails, you were referencing files on your local box and not the server.

If it succeeds, then you need to look at the permissions of the service logon running SQL Agent verses your permissions.|||Thanks for the reply.

He is currently installing the .net framework on the sequel server.

I'm primarily a vb .net developer, doubling (as many of us have to) as a sql
2000 dba.
I'm having difficulty running a vb.net exe as a sql agent job. I figured
out that sql 2000 can't really run a windows forms exe, as it thinks it
needs user interaction. However, since it can run an activex script, can it
also run a windows service produced in visual studio 2003?

not have a gui and that does not require user interaction. There are
permissions issues that you will need to consider if you are not calling the

Running a system stored procedure

I write applications in VS.net that run against SQL Server 2000. I am
trying to write a stored procedure that accesses a database in different SQL
server than the one hosting the data. I entered into the FROM statement
"<OtherServerName>.<DatabaseName>.MyTable" and I get back a message that it
can't find the server "OtherServerName" and tells me to run the store
procedure "sp_addlinkedserver" to correct this. My question is:
Where do I find this sp? Do I run it from the VS.net environment, at the
console of one of the servers? What is the procedure to run it?

You have to create a linked server from local server when you want to access
a database resides in another SQL server. So you have to login into SQL
server
using Query Analyzer or Enterprise Manager and create a linked server.
See sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin in books online or use the
enterprise manager -- conenct to source sql server --
Expand the security -- select linked server and create a new connection to
new server.

Do I need the report server running in order view a SSRS report in a report viewer control? I've created my report in .net and it works great when I'm viewing it in visual studio, but can I run it my web app without the report server.
The ReportViewer supports local mode where the report definition is distributed with the application and the application feeds the report with data. In local mode, the Report Server is not needed. More details here.sql

it is a very small script. it will create a database and five tables in the database. the largest table having around 15 fields. I would like the user to be able to enter some information on the page, one of those being a database name field. then run the script and create a database with the name being passed from the database name field.

Running a DTS Package from vb.net

Can anyone point me to some sample code ord give me an example. I'm trying to run a DTS package from my asp.net/vb.net application. I don't need to pass it any variable, just need it to run. I can't seem to find anything on the net for this.

The links you provided are not working solutions because the creators have not addressed the SQL Server Agent permissions needed to run DTS with dtsrun.exe and xp_cmdshell.
To run DTS package through a stored proc you either use DTSRUN.exe or XP_CMDSHELL which is SQL Server Agent dependent. Try the links below for DTSRUN.exe sample code and XP_CMDSHELL configurations with permissions. What I am saying is to run DTS with SQL Server Agent dependent service like xp_CMDSHELL you must give the account used to install SQL Server Agent Admin permissions in Windows and SQL Server. See, to run it, it needs to know what server to run it on, what is the name, what are the parameters being passed into it (which is cool because you can dynamically assign the server variables in the package with values passed into the stored procedure), what is the package password if there is one|||

I finally got it working. I think I'm going to write a tutorial since there aren't any good ones out there.

I generated the code for the dtsrun.exe with the dtsgui tool then created a stored procedure.

Run SSIS from ASP.net

in sql 2005 sp1,
when I try to run a package from an asp.net page
the following statement generate error:
myPackage = integrationServices.LoadFromDtsServer(packagePath,
"myServerName", Nothing)
error:
EXECUTE permission denied on object 'sp_dts_getpackage', database 'msdb',
schema 'dbo'.
I followed "Kirk Haselden" instruction on how to assign permissions for
remote user but did not solve the issue.

This issue may occur if the identity of application pool of asp.net
application does not have the proper permission on msdb database.
You may want to run inetmgr and check the identity of the Website hosting
the asp.net application. If it is "network service", you may add "nt
authortiy/network service" to login of SQL Server, and grant it proper
permission on msdb SQL Server.

I was checking those procedure and find a check on the dts owner.
I can disable these checks, but worried that would affect something else on
the server.

role to the login to work around the issue but it may bring security risk.
Based on my scope, Usually disabling these check shall not have other
effect on the server.

I quess what I am asking is, with Crystal and VB 6, I can lauch a report
through a control embedded in the exe file.
Is there a control to place in a Windows Form that can view a report without
haing a IIS Report Manager?

run sql script on sql server2000

dear all i am using ASP.net ,c# and SQL server 2000. i have create all
table, stored procedure .views in my application which is running well
in localhost but now i want to deploy it on server. for that pupose i
need to create all table, stored procedure, views on the domain server
database. can any one tell me how i can do it?
Do you have the DDL in script files? Or do you just want to transfer the database on your local
database as is to the server?

Easy option is :-
1. Backup the database in your machine [Use Backup Database]
2. Copy the backup file to Domain server
3. Restore the database [Use Restore Database command]
4. If you do not want the data then Truncate the contents of all tables.
follow the parent chld relationship
while truncating table.
Alternative is ... In the local sql server .. open enterprise manager..
Select database .. right click-- all tasks-- Generate SQL Scripts...
choose all objects , all dependant objects -- permissions...Script it as a
SQL file. Then you could use this script to create
objects in Domain sql server.
