running a sql script

how can i run a .sql script from my asp.net project?

thanks,

jbProbably need a little more information. How big is it, how often, is it dynamic, does it take parameters, does the user enter it. Describe the scenario a little|||pdraigh,

it is a very small script. it will create a database and five tables in the database. the largest table having around 15 fields. I would like the user to be able to enter some information on the page, one of those being a database name field. then run the script and create a database with the name being passed from the database name field.

thanks,

Running a Job from ASP

I have a post similar to this is the Getting Started thread but haven't had any responses so I'm going to ask an updated version of my question. What I need to do is run a job after a user clicks a button in my ASP page. I know I can use oDBConnection.pStoredProc to run a stored procedure, but is there a similar command I can use to run the job? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

InternTry this:

|||Darrell, that's pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the heads.
Tim Conlan|||

Actually, if you have the time I have a second question about puting together the DTS package. I get the fact that I can write the Stored Proc to dynamically create the job that will run the DTS package on the remote server, at least I think that's what I understand, but I want to make sure that I understand. So, the St Proc accepts a @.variable from my ASP page. The St Proc then appends the @.variable to the DTSrun command line script. So, how do I reference the @.variable when I put together the DTS package? I'm building it in Enterprise Manager and I see the field that says "Parameters:", do I just put @.variable in that field or do I need to put something else in there to get the package to pass the @.variable to the .BAT file that I will run with the DTS package?
If I've confused you or didn't provide enough information I'd be happy to clarify. Thanks
Tim Conlan
Intern (but getting better at this all the time)

|||I think you just put @.variable in there.

Running a DTS Package from vb.net

Can anyone point me to some sample code ord give me an example. I'm trying to run a DTS package from my asp.net/vb.net application. I don't need to pass it any variable, just need it to run. I can't seem to find anything on the net for this.
Thanks in advance,
Ryan

There are two ways to do it, through VB.NET code, or through a stored procedure using master..xp_cmdshell. Here's one:

The links you provided are not working solutions because the creators have not addressed the SQL Server Agent permissions needed to run DTS with dtsrun.exe and xp_cmdshell.
To run DTS package through a stored proc you either use DTSRUN.exe or XP_CMDSHELL which is SQL Server Agent dependent. Try the links below for DTSRUN.exe sample code and XP_CMDSHELL configurations with permissions. What I am saying is to run DTS with SQL Server Agent dependent service like xp_CMDSHELL you must give the account used to install SQL Server Agent Admin permissions in Windows and SQL Server. Hope this helps.

|||This seems way too complicated. Isn't there simple code I can use to create a stored procedue that calls a dts package. Then I can just execute the stored procedure from my asp page. I'm just looking for some sample T-SQL code that executes a DTS Package.
like this. spexecuteDTSPackage('mypackage')
This would be wonderful.|||I don't know of an easier way because it is SQL Server Agent that runs your DTS package through xp_cmdshell.|||That is the DTSrun utility, which in a stored procedure, you have to use master..xp_cmdShell, and get the rights to do so. See, to run it, it needs to know what server to run it on, what is the name, what are the parameters being passed into it (which is cool because you can dynamically assign the server variables in the package with values passed into the stored procedure), what is the package password if there is one|||

I finally got it working. I think I'm going to write a tutorial since there aren't any good ones out there.

I generated the code for the dtsrun.exe with the dtsgui tool then created a stored procedure.

Thanks for all your help.

You ever write a tutorial for this? I have the same problem and need major help getting a dts to run from .net.

Run SSIS from ASP.net

in sql 2005 sp1,
when I try to run a package from an asp.net page
the following statement generate error:
myPackage = integrationServices.LoadFromDtsServer(packagePath,
"myServerName", Nothing)
error:
EXECUTE permission denied on object 'sp_dts_getpackage', database 'msdb',
schema 'dbo'.
I followed "Kirk Haselden" instruction on how to assign permissions for
remote user but did not solve the issue.
thanks for help
what permissions should be assigned and to which user.Hello,
This issue may occur if the identity of application pool of asp.net
application does not have the proper permission on msdb database.
You may want to run inetmgr and check the identity of the Website hosting
the asp.net application. If it is "network service", you may add "nt
authortiy/network service" to login of SQL Server, and grant it proper
permission on msdb SQL Server.

As mentioned in the error message, you may want grant SQL server symin

|||Hi,
Easy option is :-
1. Backup the database in your machine [Use Backup Database]
2. Copy the backup file to Domain server
3. Restore the database [Use Restore Database command]
4. If you do not want the data then Truncate the contents of all tables.
follow the parent chld relationship
while truncating table.
Alternative is ... In the local sql server .. open enterprise manager..
Select database .. right click-- all tasks-- Generate SQL Scripts...
choose all objects , all dependant objects -- permissions...Script it as a
SQL file. Then you could use this script to create
objects in Domain sql server.

Whenever you reach GO in the script file, execute what you have in the command object using
ExecuteNonQuery.

You have a local SQL Server with schema and data. You have script files for the DDL on your local
SQL Server.
You now want to get both the schema and data to the other SQL Server.
I'm confused by the comment:
> but i don't have direct access of domain enterprise
> manager or query analyzer i am having only DSN Name uid and pwd.
If you have a local SQL Server, you would have both Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager, right?
Anyhow, why not transfer the whole database using backup and restore? If you do want to script out
the data as well as the DDL, check out some options at:
